Environmental studies is a
related to interactions between humans and the natural world and is
essential to a liberal arts education. Truman's new Environmental
Studies Program exists to examine how the actions of humans affect the
environment, and how the environment in turn affects all living
organisms.
Humans, the environment, and
their interactions determine the diversity, abundance and quality of life
supported on our planet. Human actions that alter the environment are
complex; what seems clear is that the pace and scope of such alterations
is unprecedented. It is also clear that when these changes are
detrimental, their solutions will be inherently
interdisciplinary. When pursued in isolation, narrower disciplinary solutions
will be
inadequate, be they ecological, social, or economic.
In the Environmental Studies
Program, students gain a distinctive basis for speaking, writing, and
acting about our environment, its needs and opportunities. We currently
